Ms. Jarrell is in her 12th year as an educator and leads the pilot Personalized Learning Cohort at Stagg SOE. In partnership with LEAP Innovations, she is bringing to life a “learner-focused” classroom that places students in ‘the driver’s seat’ of their own learning. An alumni of CTR, Ms. Jarrell is the Personalized Learning Pilot Lead at Stagg SOE, a level 1-ranked school in Chicago’s Englewood neighborhood. After discovering teaching was her passion, Ms. Jarrell joined the Chicago Teacher Residency Program, where she continues to mentor resident teachers. She was also instrumental in AUSL through her participation in opening two of our turnaround schools: Howe and Stagg SOE. Currently, she teaches 7th and 8th Grade ELA, mentors for the CTR, and leads the Pilot team for the Personalized Learning Cohort.

This process begins when students self-identify their level of autonomy. Students in the ‘explorer category’ use peer or teacher support to stay on task, as Ms. Jarrell helps them build the self-control to move on to higher levels of autonomy throughout the year. Every day begins with a feelings card, which helps Ms. Jarrell learn about her students and in what state they are coming into the classroom to better connect with them on a personal level. She then checks-in with students having a tough day and makes accommodations when necessary. In one instance, she kept a stash of granola bars for students feeling lightheaded and/or those who didn’t have a chance to eat breakfast. Ever since Ms. Jarrell began working at an AUSL network school, she tracked student data on scorecards and held ‘data review’ conferences. In the past, Ms. Jarrell wrote these cards and discussed goals with students. After transitioning to PL, Ms. Jarrell found her students had more ownership of their goals. Students now report their own data and create personalized goals – one student wants to learn 2,000 new vocabulary words. This type of goal-setting and accountability sets students up for long-term success.
