After the Training Year

Chicago Teacher Residency™ graduates serve as a critical pipeline of teacher talent for AUSL’s network of schools; each year, over 90 percent of our graduates are employed as teachers in Chicago. Each spring, upcoming graduates are matched with positions in new and existing AUSL schools. While employment with CPS after the training year is not guaranteed, we expect that nearly all of our graduates will join schools in the network of AUSL-managed Chicago Public Schools. AUSL graduates who join CPS schools are employed by the Chicago Board of Education and earn a salary for the school year of over $50,000 plus benefits and pension.

Turnaround Schools

AUSL Network Schools

Following the training year, most AUSL residents will be offered employment as a Chicago Public Schools teacher in an AUSL-managed school. AUSL’s network currently includes 31 Chicago Public Schools.

Selection and Placement

Selection and Placement

AUSL principals are chosen specifically for their ability to lead and inspire teachers and school staff to deliver rapid and sustained improvement in student achievement. Each spring, the principals observe residents in the classroom and select new teachers for their schools who join other experienced, like-minded teachers and school staff.

Ongoing Support

After the training year, AUSL resident graduates who work in AUSL-managed CPS schools also benefit from ongoing coaching, development, and support. AUSL’s model for creating and sustaining high-performing schools includes programs focused on ensuring the success of each teacher, including:

  • Summer professional development
  • Full-time coaches in each school who observe, advise, and support teachers with professional development, individualized observations and feedback
  • Assessments, technology tools, curriculum developers, and other resources to support teachers as they differentiate instruction to meet the needs of every child

Resident Alumni

AUSL resident graduates are committed and successful urban teachers in Chicago. Many AUSL graduates continue to teach in a high-needs Chicago Public School long after their 4-year commitment; some have gone on to become mentor teachers, coaches, assistant principals, and principals.
