On Wednesday, March 25th, Juan Uribe, a teacher at AUSL network school the Casals School of Excellence, and Demetrius Heard, a Music Teacher at AUSL network school the Fuller School of Excellence, spoke at the Chicago Board of Education Board meeting. Both are graduates of AUSL’s Chicago Teacher Residency Program (CTR).
Mr. Uribe and Mr. Heard spoke about their passion for teaching and positive experiences in the Residency program. The CTR was developed in partnership with the Chicago Public School System (CPS) and is one of the nation’s oldest residency programs. Residents obtain a Master’s degree, gain in-classroom experience, and work with an experienced mentor teacher. To support CPS’s commitment to equity in education, the CTR focuses on recruiting candidates from minority populations, and candidates interested in a career such as a Diverse Learning Educator.
Mr. Heard addressed how the CTR prepared him to be a lifelong teacher and spoke fondly about how the training and support he received during the program provided the foundation needed for his current role as the music teacher at Fuller, a job he loves.
Mr. Uribe informed the board that he feels rewarded to serve the Latino community of Humboldt Park. In his current role as a teacher at the Casals School of Excellence and is grateful for the foundation the CTR program provided.
