Ms. Jarrell is in her 12th year as an educator and leads the pilot Personalized Learning Cohort at Stagg SOE. In partnership with LEAP Innovations, she is bringing to life a “learner-focused” classroom that places students in ‘the driver’s seat’ of their own learning. Did You Know?
An alumni of CTR, Ms. Jarrell is the Personalized Learning Pilot Lead at Stagg SOE, a level 1-ranked school in Chicago’s Englewood neighborhood. After discovering teaching was her passion, Ms. Jarrell joined the Chicago Teacher Residency Program, where she continues to mentor resident teachers. She was also instrumental in AUSL through her participation in opening two of our turnaround schools: Howe and Stagg SOE. Currently, she teaches 7th and 8th Grade ELA, mentors for the CTR, and leads the Pilot team for the Personalized Learning Cohort.

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Personalized Learning (PL) helps students build independence, confidence, and self-awareness to make informed choices that suit their own learning style. This process begins when students self-identify their level of autonomy. Students in the ‘explorer category’ use peer or teacher support to stay on task, as Ms. Jarrell helps them build the self-control to move on to higher levels of autonomy throughout the year. [/vc_column_text][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/2″][vc_single_image image=”7440″ img_size=”large”][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/2″][vc_single_image image=”7441″ img_size=”large”][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_empty_space][vc_column_text]This theme of self-reflective student-choice is present in everything Ms. Jarrell’s students do. Thanks to LEAP Innovations, students can learn from seats that fit their activity level and desired comfort. There are high stools, swivel chairs, standard desks, and bouncy seats. For instruction, students have a say in selecting the platform that best fits their learning style such as whole group, small group, peer-to-peer work, and personalized EdTech pathways.[/vc_column_text][vc_row_inner css=”.vc_custom_1551302662118{border-top-width: 1px !important;border-right-width: 1px !important;border-bottom-width: 1px !important;border-left-width: 1px !important;background-color: #ffffff !important;border-left-color: #1e7fc3 !important;border-left-style: solid !important;border-right-color: #1e7fc3 !important;border-right-style: solid !important;border-top-color: #1e7fc3 !important;border-top-style: solid !important;border-bottom-color: #1e7fc3 !important;border-bottom-style: solid !important;border-radius: 1px !important;}”][vc_column_inner width=”1/2″][vc_empty_space][stm_blockquote css=”.vc_custom_1553092176246{margin-top: 1px !important;margin-right: 1px !important;margin-bottom: 1px !important;margin-left: 1px !important;border-top-width: 1px !important;border-right-width: 1px !important;border-bottom-width: 1px !important;border-left-width: 1px !important;}”]Personalized learning gives us more freedom to choose what we want to work on and when. I enjoy school more since it started. I have more autonomy. [/stm_blockquote][vc_column_text]– Kayla Rousseau, Former Student[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/2″][vc_empty_space][stm_blockquote css=”.vc_custom_1553092279989{margin-top: 1px !important;margin-right: 1px !important;margin-bottom: 1px !important;margin-left: 1px !important;border-top-width: 1px !important;border-right-width: 1px !important;border-bottom-width: 1px !important;border-left-width: 1px !important;}”]Personalized learning is about building productive members of society. Students are learning how to work by themselves and engage with other students. They are given the autonomy to advocate for themselves.[/stm_blockquote][vc_column_text]– Ms. Ashley Jarrell, Stagg School of Excellence[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_empty_space][vc_column_text]Personalized Learning (PL) also complements the AUSL network and Stagg’s Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) work by giving students a voice and outlet to express their needs. Every day begins with a feelings card, which helps Ms. Jarrell learn about her students and in what state they are coming into the classroom to better connect with them on a personal level. She then checks-in with students having a tough day and makes accommodations when necessary. In one instance, she kept a stash of granola bars for students feeling lightheaded and/or those who didn’t have a chance to eat breakfast. [/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”7442″ img_size=”large”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row gap=”10″][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_column_text]The final area of focus to build a Personalized Learning environment is growing ownership of learning and the class itself. Ever since Ms. Jarrell began working at an AUSL network school, she tracked student data on scorecards and held ‘data review’ conferences. In the past, Ms. Jarrell wrote these cards and discussed goals with students. After transitioning to PL, Ms. Jarrell found her students had more ownership of their goals. Students now report their own data and create personalized goals – one student wants to learn 2,000 new vocabulary words. This type of goal-setting and accountability sets students up for long-term success. They remind their classmates of outstanding assignments and call on their peers to line up. It’s clear Ms. Jarrell is a facilitator of each student’s personal journey to achieve their goals.
